Framework for establishing regulatory guidelines to control antibiotic resistance in treated effluents

چکیده
Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human-health and wellbeing. resistant bacteria (ARB) antibiotic genes (ARGs) are environmental contaminants that circulate among humans, animals the environment. In urban areas, wastewater treatment plants recipients of these contaminants. Despite partial elimination during treatment, final effluents, even after disinfection, contain high doses ARB&ARG. The consequent continuous discharge effluents has important adverse impacts, which particularly intense in vulnerable deteriorated receiving environments (e.g., due pollution, droughts or floods, reduced biodiversity). ARB&ARGs biological capable self-replication horizontal gene-transfer, capabilities pollution-induced selective pressure effects absence competition can be enhanced environments. Moreover, as other contaminants, transported, mainly through water, increasing risks circling back source exposure humans. current knowledge about implications terms contamination human-health, well advances on technology quantification methods, support need timeliness implementing regular monitoring systems. Because no single chemical microbiological parameter used infer load, its specific should part parameters assess quality. definition minimal requirements integrated essential map at time- space scales, design implement corrective measures. These goals technically economically feasible incorporated into quality directives.

Overexpression of antibiotic resistance genes in hospital effluents over time
Objectives Effluents contain a diverse abundance of antibiotic resistance genes that augment the resistome of receiving aquatic environments. However, uncertainty remains regarding their temporal persistence, transcription and response to anthropogenic factors, such as antibiotic usage. We present a spatiotemporal study within a river catchment (River Cam, UK) that aims to determine the contrib...
متن کاملRegulatory RNAs Involved in Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance
An increasing number of RNAs have been recently shown to possess regulatory functions similar to those of proteins. In bacteria, these regulatory RNAs are usually noncoding and are short size (50–500 nts) transcripts that are often referred to as small RNAs (sRNAs) [1,2]. These sRNAs are synthesized under specific environmental conditions and play a major role in the regulation of various cellu...
متن کاملFunctional Repertoire of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Antibiotic Manufacturing Effluents and Receiving Freshwater Sediments
Environments polluted by direct discharges of effluents from antibiotic manufacturing are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which could potentially be transferred to human pathogens. However, our knowledge about the identity and diversity of ARGs in such polluted environments remains limited. We applied functional metagenomics to explore the resistome of two Croatian ...
متن کاملAntibiotic control of antibiotic resistance in hospitals: a simulation study
BACKGROUND Using mathematical deterministic models of the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections and antibiotic resistance, it has been shown that the rates of hospital-acquired bacterial infection and frequency of antibiotic infections can be reduced by (i) restricting the admission of patients colonized with resistant bacteria, (ii) increasing the rate of turnover of patients, (iii) red...
متن کاملNeed for national/regional guidelines and policies in India to combat antibiotic resistance.
Antimicrobial resistance is an issue of great signiÞ cance for public health at the global level. Considered as wonder drugs, antibiotics are often prescribed inappropriately and inadequately and have thus become one of the highly abused agents.[1] Bacterial pathogens causing acute infections are increasingly exhibiting resistance to the commonly used antibiotics and have become a great threat ...
